PROUDLY PART OF A DUAL DESIGNATION

Westport and the Rideau Lakes is very fortunate to fall within the geographical boundaries of two UNESCO designations. This is unique, as only a handful of other occurances can be found worldwide!

In 2007, the Rideau Canal was designated a World Heritage Site and is the oldest canal in North America to remain operational since its inception with most of its structures intact. A visit through the Rideau Lakes region will allow you to explore many different lockstations along the Rideau Canal Waterway. Follow the Rideau Heritage Route from Kingston to Ottawa with stops in Westport and the Rideau Lakes!

Westport and the Rideau Lakes region is situated within the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve, one of fifteen biosphere reserves in Canada. The FABR was designated in 2002 based on the community's dedication to the four pillars of sustainability. The mandate of all world biosphere reserves is to protect areas of globally significant biodiversity and to provide education and support for sustainable community development.

The Frontenac Arch Biosphere is made up different networks of organizations and individuals with invested interest in this region and thus, is referred to as the Biosphere Network. The Westport and Rideau Lakes Chamber of Commerce are proud partners of the Biosphere Network. The recently launched Explore the Arch website demonstrates the depth and diversity of the FABR initiatives.
